How to Make Your Home Safer With Home Automation (5 Simple Ways)

The release date:2020/12/30 0:00:00

Home security is one of those fields in life where prevention is better than cure. You think burglars will never visit your home. How would they dare to try getting in? You say to yourself. And then, a moment later is a moment too late.

In the past, home security used to have nothing to do with home automation. Those were the years of keypads, sensors, motion detectors, fire alarms, smoke alarms, and a bunch of other devices that helped to keep you safe. Home automation, on the other hand, was pretty much nothing at that time.

Luckily, that’s all over. Smart home automation is now the thing, and home security has kept up as much as it could. Now making your home smarter equals making it safer too.

This quick guide is aimed at those wondering how to build a smart ecosystem between home automation and security. You’ll get yourself open to a new world of possibilities; we assure you. But first, let’s review the basics…

What is Smart Home Automation?

With smart home automation, you use internet-connected devices to monitor and control various areas of your house. We’re talking about cameras, locks, lights, and more.

These devices are connected through a smart home controller and are accessible anywhere through an app installed on your phone or tablet. To put it simply, a smart home gives you control over everything in your home and how it works.

We at HDL Automation can help you install and support a wide range of smart home security devices. In case you are not that familiar with home automation, we’ll explore here below 10 ways in which smart home technology can make your everyday life safer and more convenient.

1.Smart Window Sensors

a.Get app updates when a first-floor window is open and receive app updates if your monitored window is still open at bedtime

Smart sensors can work as an extra pair of eyes reacting to any movements either from you or from someone else. They can help you and your family, for example, if you need to pee in the middle of the night. But they can also alert you if something is going wrong or if there’s someone else in the house.

An example of smart sensors, windows sensors are small devices with big potential. They can inform you at any time if a window is open. You will receive app updates telling you if anyone opens a window when you and your family are away.

This small device is even more useful at night. Imagine you went to sleep and forgot to close one of your windows facing the backyard. You can create a rule - another word for “pre-existing command” - so that you’ll receive a reminder at bedtime if any window is left open.

2.Smart Thermostats

a.Sync your smart thermostat with your monitored smoke detectors

Despite being increasingly widespread, smart thermostats are not exactly the first device that you’d think of when it comes to smart home security. However, they go a long way in protecting your house from fires.

When synced with a smart home security system, a smart thermostat can be used to do even more than regulating the temperature. In particular, you can link it to a security system’s monitored smoke detector.

This way, in case of fire, the smoke detectors can send a signal to the thermostat and tell it to shut down the HVAC system. It might not sound like a lot at first. However, when a smoke alarm goes off, and your HVAC keeps running, you are basically cycling air around your house. This means that instead of isolating a fire, you’re pushing smoke and toxic gasses upstairs much faster through the vents. Not to scare you, but you should also know that the first cause of death related to fires is smoke inhalation.

You can program the thermostat to shut down in the event of a fire and buy yourself some time to leave the house safely.

3.Smart Door Control

a.Use home door lock to keep your home safe and to receive a reminder if you forget to lock the door

It might be you or your kids, but for sure, someone in your family is more forgetful than others. There’s not much to laugh when you lose your door keys, and you’re stuck outside looking for a pair of spare keys. It’s even worse when the person finding them is a stranger and not someone from your family.

With a smart door lock, you can control your front porch anytime and anywhere. Imagine, for example, that your kids forget to lock the door when they leave the house. The only thing you’ll need to do then - besides scolding them - is locking it up from the home automation app downloaded on your phone.

If this isn’t cool enough, you can also create individual or temporary user codes. This way, if you’re away from home, you can share one with any friends, housekeepers, or guests that might need to get in while you’re away. Considering that the code is unique, it only works when this person is supposed to visit your home, and it will expire right after they left. You can then know exactly when they come and they go.

4.Smart Lighting

a.Pretend there’s always someone at home

If there’s one thing that “Home Alone” taught us is that you can do a lot with lights, music, and a few mannequins. That being said, we’re not implying you should leave for the holidays without your kids.

It’s well-known that burglars tend to shy away from homes where at least a few lights are on at night. This usually means that they’re occupied, and it’s much less risky for them when no one’s around.

It’s not practical to keep the lights always on. The electrical bills will hit you hard the month after. However, with a smart lighting control system, you can control lighting from anywhere with your smartphone. Click here to learn more about smart lighting control systems.

5.Smart Security Cameras

a.Unleash the potential of video recordings

Smart security cameras are the first device that comes to mind when they think of home security. And yet, with smart home technology, you won’t have to wonder what’s going on at home when you’re away. You can see everything with live or recorded video.

In recent years, smart video surveillance systems have become increasingly more affordable and easier to install. No wonder they’re considered one of the main smart home security tools for all homeowners.
